Television Woman
Read My Year of Rest and Relaxation anxiously, the cover so recognizable allows for not quite talking, just making conversation with randos in not quite heaven, just a room you sublet, but now you have a lease, you have a TV. I don’t know what you watch these days, do you still get those curious ads? Happy American women, smiling running across a field, pushing a child on a swing, holding a clearly empty mug of coffee and sighing through their shoulders contentedly. Sparkly testimonials. “Ask your doctor if __________®️ is right for you!” Are they sick of it? Would they like to be? Sick of reading the same book, smelling the same flower, pushing their never aging children’s stroller? Sick of smiling their same smiles? Sick of the pain of never feeling sick? Are they sick of their own voices, perpetually sped up in the background of their infinite relief? “Side effects include but are not limited to: wondering which one is more hurtful: “Ok?”, “Okay?”, “K?” or “O.K.?”; tingling sensations in hands and feet; thinking that sex is your salvation; bleeding gums; having meltdowns when your shirt is just a little itchy; malabsorption; depression; hair loss; double, no, triple texting your ex; telling people you’re writing a book even though you’ve only gotten 400 words down; tummy aches; death.” “Ask your doctor if ____________®️ is right for you!”
Your poetry assignment for the week is to ask your doctor if Poetry Trapper Keeper is right for you!
