My therapist told me to read “Codependent No More” and get off my high horse
Larissa responding to an existential crisis (and to Kelly's piece "Have you ever been fingered by the invisible hand?")
And I’ve never not had a best friend and
and
I’ve had a Swedish best friend and a Chinese best friend and a Finnish best friend and a British best friend and a British-Indian best friend and an Indian best friend and a Syrian best friend and a Canadian best friend and a Scottish best friend and a pair of Uruguayan-Dutch best friends and many Brazilian best friends and
and
A sister best friend and a boyfriend best friend and a dog best friend and a professor best friend and an eating disorder best friend and a coke habit (only on weekends) best friend and an imaginary best friend and a made up best friend and a club-bathroom-one-night-only best friend and
and
Dead best friends and dead-to-me best friends and back-from-the-dead best friends and only-in-the-dead-of-the-night best friends and
and
We’ve gotten matching necklaces and charm bracelets and tattoos and body image issues and detention slips and ironic T-shirts and chickenpox and fevers and socks and hangovers and Juicy Couture perfume bottles and haircuts and college diplomas and mani-pedis and traumas and
and
We’ve shared beds and sweaters and lice and secrets and shoes and instagram accounts and boys and girls and nail polish and paintings and Blockbuster video cards and lies and arguments and phone chargers and test answers and stale beers and Gillette daisy razors and joints and
and
I’ve loved them and hated them and angered them and had sex with them and called them and yearned for them and yelled at them and kissed them and peer pressured them and cherished them and held them and laughed at them and laughed with them and smothered them and forgotten them and remembered them and mourned them and texted them and
and
We’ve said “hello” and “fuck you” and “who’d have thought we’d be friends?” and “I thought you were a bitch when I met you” and “should we order some pizza?” and “can I bum a cigarette?” and “you didn’t hear this from me” and “can I tell you something?” and “I love you” and “thinking of you” and “shut up” and “I read this and I think you’d like it” and “I miss you” and “please don’t tell my mom” and “I burned you a CD” and “I’ve made you a playlist” and “that’s our song” and “did you see that meme I tagged you in?” and “hold on, let me send you the screenshots” and “ew don’t post that” and “they don’t deserve you” and “did you do the homework?” and “break up with them” and “can you proofread this poem?” and “FaceTime?” and “I need you” and
and
We’ve said “good bye”.
